How to find the right community for your brand.

Fit beats reach, every time. A community of 200 people who genuinely align with your brand will outperform a community of 20,000 who don't, in engagement, in word of mouth, and in how the partnership actually feels to everyone involved. The hard part isn't finding communities. There are thousands of them. The hard part is finding the right one. We use three filters to evaluate a match, in this order:

  • Values alignment. Do you actually share something, beyond the surface? A running shoe brand and a run club is obvious. A rose brand and a supper club is less obvious, but it can work if both sides genuinely care about the same thing: bringing people together over a shared table.
  • Audience overlap. Look past follower count at who's actually in the room (age, city, income, and, more importantly, what they're looking for from the brands they let in). A community that wants discounts is a different match than one that wants status or access.
  • Activation fit. Can you create something with this community, not just for it? If the only thing you can offer is a discount code, you haven't found a fit. You've found a coupon distribution channel.

Vanity reach is the opposite of all three. It's picking the community with the biggest number attached and hoping alignment sorts itself out afterward. It rarely does. Audiences can tell when a brand showed up for the size of the room, not the people in it. Start from your brand's actual values, not your target demographic. Demographics tell you who to reach. Values tell you who to actually work with.
